This expedition takes you deep into one of the most remote and least explored islands of Papua New Guinea—Manus Island. The journey begins at Momote Airport on Los Negros Island, connected by a bridge to Manus’ capital, Lorengau. Manus is known for its dense tropical forests, rich biodiversity, and unique endemic species, making it an exceptional destination for birders and naturalists.
Among its remarkable wildlife is the Superb Pitta, the island’s mascot bird and one of the world’s most elusive and striking pittas. This forest-dwelling species is classified as endangered due to habitat loss and its naturally restricted range. Another fascinating endemic is the Emerald Tree Snail, renowned for its vivid green shell, which local communities traditionally use for crafting ornaments. Another major highlight is the Manus Boobook, a rarely seen nocturnal species that inhabits the island’s dense forests. Little is known about its behaviour, making it a prized find for birdwatchers. With patience and expertise, this tour offers an excellent chance to locate and observe this secretive species during dedicated night walks. Your moments are waiting!
